About Southland Engineering, Inc.

Southland Engineering, Inc. has been providing professional civil engineering, land surveying, and land planning services to private and public sector clients throughout North Georgia since 1998. We are a locally owned surveying and engineering firm. Our success comes from our highly trained staff, excellent customer service, extensive local knowledge, and our commitment to the principles of responsible land use planning. 

Over our history, we have accumulated and maintained a massive library of resource data for the North Georgia area, allowing us to better serve our clients as a project lead or support role. We will identify and assist you in bringing your project to realization within your schedules, deadlines, and budgets. Because of our extensive knowledge and understanding of local regulations and procedures, we can quickly identify the local requirements required for your project and react efficiently to any project changes or needs that arise. We are sensitive to local community issues and concerns and we are active in contributing to community issues to address these concerns.

We pride ourselves on having a well-trained staff. We are certificate cardholders of Worksite Erosion Control and are affiliated with the GSWCC. Our staff also receives hours of training through NPDES Training. Our engineers use the most up-to-date versions of Auto CAD and Bentley Inroads software available. We are also members of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Bartow County Chamber of Commerce.

Karl Lutjens P.E., Owner/President

Karl founded Southland Engineering, Inc. on August 14, 1999, incorporating the firm on October 18, 2000. He began his engineering career at Rosser International with the vision of bringing his engineering and planning knowledge and expertise to the Cartersville, GA area to serve the nearby cities and counties in the region.

Karl has managed a staff of engineers and technicians in the preparation of construction documents for public and private clients. He is currently responsible for business and client development, workload assignments and projections, billing and collection, developing quality control and quality assurance procedures, and error reduction.

Kevin Cooney P.L.S., Vice President

Kevin has over 14 years of experience in the fields of civil engineering and land surveying project management. He has surveyed and designed a number of financial, corporate, medical, mixed-use, administrative, and municipal facilities. His background as a civil engineer gives Kevin a strong base for understanding what exactly is required for surveying a site, gathering and presenting field data, and creating engineering design plans.
